Lavender Fact Sheet-for people and animals!

Lavender

 Lavender 6-10-09 (2)

Lavender is grown mainly for the production of essential oil of lavender.  Essential oils are highly concentrated, volatile oils that can be extracted from aromatic plants. The fragrant, pale purple flowers and flower buds are used in a water-and-steam distillation process to extract the oil. It is best to use organically grown plants, free from chemicals.

How to Grow Lavender

Lavenders flourish best in dry, well-drained, sandy or gravelly soils in full sun.  All types need little or no fertilizer and good air circulation.

Using the Dried Flowers

Dried and sealed in pouches, lavender flowers can be placed among items of clothing to give a fresh fragrance. Flower spikes are often used for dried flower arrangements, potpourri and in sachets.  Floral water (hydrosols) can also be made from the flowers.

Using the Essential Oil

Lavender is a favorite for the herbal first aid kit and is typically for topical purposes; not given internally. It speeds the healing process of wounds by encouraging cell growth. A few drops of the essential oil of lavender can be diluted in water and used to clean wounds. It can also be mixed in a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil, for a relaxing massage.

Lavender has a very calm and soothing aroma which can be beneficial when inhaling it.

Calendula

From spring to fall, calendula flowers show their cheery yellow or orange faces, opening during the day and closing up at night.  It grows very well in pots and loves the sun.  I harvest them for all of their growing season and dry them on screens.  Calendula has some pretty amazing skin healing properties.  When applied topically, it quickly soothes cuts and wounds and moisturizes dry, itchy, chapped or cracked skin!

It is versatile enough to be used on both people and animals.  When working with horses, the petals can be added to their feed or given as a tea.  It is very useful for animals with dry, itchy skin.  A balm can be made and applied to any scrapes or wounds.  The dried flowers are infused in a carrier oil, which becomes the base for making a balm.

Fundraiser for Senior Horses!

A Fundraiser to benefit Senior Horses!

Ferrell Hollow Farm (FHF) is a dedicated retirement farm in TN for senior horses over the age of 20, most of who arrive with special needs. In keeping with our passion to help as many senior horses across the country as possible, we have selected a non-profit sanctuary also dedicated to caring for senior horses to help!

Traveller’s Rest Equine Elders Sanctuary (TREES) is a non-profit rescue located in VA.  They are not your typical non-profit horse rescue organization though. Many of the residents come to the sanctuary from backgrounds of neglect or abandonment, but TREES does not dwell on the past.   Instead, they celebrate the personalities that emerge as their elders return to "just being horses" in a low stress environment. http://www.equineelders.org/index.htm  “Honor the Wisdom”!

For a limited time, Ferrell Hollow Farm will donate a portion of its proceeds from sales on their website’s store page to TREES!  Any web order placed from June 1st thru June 14th qualifies!  Just go to http://www.ferrellhollowfarm.net/Store.html to begin shopping!

Ferrell Hollow Farm’s Natural Horse Care line was developed out of a need for non-chemical products that actually worked.  All formulas are developed and tested by Cindy Daigre on the senior horses at our retirement farm.  Only pure grade essential oils and pesticide free herbs are used. FHF also has a natural body care product line for PEOPLE! As with all of our products, only cruelty-free ingredients are used (no animals are harmed)!

TREES has created a wish list of FHF items they would love to have.  So help them double up on the benefits by not only receiving a monetary donation at the end of this fundraising period from your purchases, but consider ordering something just for them to use on their elder residents!

Winter Herbal Blend for Horses

Ferrell Hollow Farm has chosen four amazing herbs to blend together for our Winter Herbal Blend.  It can help your horse ease into the seasonal transition of winter as the temperatures began to fall.

Burdock helps relieve dry, scurfy skin conditions and recurrent sores by cleansing the liver and kidneys.

Meadowsweet has been hailed as the “herbal aspirin” due to its salicylic acid content, which has anti-inflammatory properties and is useful for joint and muscle pain. It also protects the digestive tract and reduces excess acid, making it an excellent choice for ulcers and diarrhea.

Parsley is considered a digestive tonic that reduces flatulence, supports the kidneys and removes toxins that cause joint pain.

Rosemary has a wonderful fragrance, stimulates circulation and also contains antibacterial and antifungal properties.
