Reaching Equines In Need

The mission of REIN (Reaching Equines In Need) is to provide short term assistance to TN horse owners in times of need.  Be it natural disaster or personal crisis, our beloved equine companions are sometimes the unfortunate victims.  REIN is comprised of horse owners from a variety of disciplines, united to protect horses in the state of Tennessee.

REIN’s first fundraiser, “The REIN Event” is set to coincide with the first anniversary of Tennessee’s largest horse cruelty seizure.  While it was unfortunate that 84 horses were found to be in such horrific conditions, it was the catalyst in forming an equine assistance group that is now REIN.

“The REIN Event” was held at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds in Nashville, TN on Saturday November 20, 2010.  The event included clinics by several area equestrian professionals (Dr. Nathaniel Wright of TN Equine Hospital, Josh and Gillian Guin of Crossroads Natural Horsemanship, Dale Rudin of Maverick Horsemanship and Josh Lyons of Lyons Legacy with a surprise visit from John Lyons!)

Several exhibitors displayed their goods (Ferrell Hollow Farm, Stablemates Tack Shop, Piece by Peace, BeautiControl, Premier Jewelry, Scentsy, Loving Kneads Animal Massage, and a special appearance from Clifford, the amazing Morgan horse and his owner and artist Nancy Bailey!)

A special “REIN Maker” award was presented to Representative Janis Sontany for her work to strengthen animal cruelty laws in TN.

The Tennessean newspaper and Fox News Channel 17 came to interview REIN Event Staff and do a story on the horses and organization.

Over 200 items were donated for the silent auction and amazing deals could be found at the tack and clothing consignment area!  And of course, several of the 84 rescued horses were present in the stable area, some already adopted while others are still available for adoption thru the rescues that so lovingly care for them such as Almost Home Animal Rescue of Murfreesboro, TN and Horse Haven of Knoxville, TN.

It is a privilege to be a part of this organization, as its mission to help horses in need is one that I believe in.  Keep up with the latest updates by viewing the website regularly at www.tnrein.com.

Horses on grass restriction, diet paddock or desert climate may need to have additional vitamins and minerals added to round out their diet.  Vitamin E is lost thru the hay drying and baling process and many nutrients are lost or diminished when foods are cooked or processed.

Loaded with vitamins and minerals, raw, organic seeds are designed to supplement what is often lacking in a horse’s diet, the natural way!

The suggested daily feeding of ¼ cup will supply 15 grams of protein.

2 lbs, 3 oz is a one month supply for one horse.  Larger quantities are available upon request.

November Special: Thru November 30th, purchase one tub of Seed Mix at a Special Price of 10% off! Only $26.00 per tub!  Purchase two or more tubs at only $25.00 each!

Francis in the Fall

Francis is the big Percheron horse that I adopted a year ago from Pets Alive in NY–he was retired there from his life as a service horse on the streets of NYC pulling a carriage.  He is a honey of a horse and I love him so.  He was meant to come live with me.  He is 27 and is tough and sensitive at the same time.  Tough to have worked the streets 12 + years, endured road founder, a leg injury, contracted tendon, ringbone, sidebone, laminitis, arthritis, possible navicular to name a few of his issues ;)  But I love this old guy dearly just as he is and am equipped to care for such senior special needs horses.  He is a special soul and sweet.  I think he was shown kindness in his life before me–I am grateful for that.

Today I asked Rachel to make a special lunch for both he and Mary–soaked timothy/alfalfa cubes with my special psyllium mash recipe.  They LOVED it as I suspected they would–it is that kind of lip smacking good!  This afternoon Francis was laying down near the front fence and we kept a watchful eye on him for about an hour.  Then I decided to check on him up close and personal.  Right as I got to the gate, he got up.  He didn't move, but was very alert.  He loves when his momma comes to give him special attention.  Chopped forage, homeopathics and his favorite orchard hay–and it wasn't even meal time! He has been sore footed and very slow moving for 5 days now.  Just picking up and cleaning the front feet triggered a soreness I suspect.  Amanda came yesterday to do Reiki work on him and will return tomorrow for another session.  I can never say enough good things about this wonderful horse for who I am grateful came into my life and will always be near and dear to my heart :)
