Francis has skin issues

A few weeks ago I noticed a couple of very small scurfy type areas on Francis's groin area so I added Spirulina to his diet.  Spirulina is a blue green algae touted as a "super food", having a complete amino acid profile, good protein levels and ability to calm allergic reactions.  His sheath had become swollen as well.  The sores got larger and are confined to the insides of his hind legs and area in front of his sheath.  Herbs for skin conditions such as Calendula and Cleavers were also added to his diet and a homeopathic remedy for swelling.  As the spirulina dose was increased, I've noticed he is walking around very well, his attitude is great and his coat is very soft and shiny :)  However this morning upon close inspection, the skin issues are still present.  The sores and scurfy areas are still itchy and are noticeable when looking at the insides of his hind legs.  The sheath is still swollen, however not quite as much.  Topical remedies for itch relief have also been applied daily.  The interesting fact is that about this time last year the same thing happened, but to a lesser degree.  It seemed to resolve itself by spring despite all of the similar attempts I made to treat it internally with nutrition and externally with topicals.  There is an auto-immune disorder that can present itself this way, but it is usually more severe than this and almost impossible to treat.  I will continue to fine-tune his diet and nutritional plan as I can.

Lavender Wound Set

Inspired by the beauty of Ferrell Hollow Farm’s gardens, lavender horse care products such as Lavender Wound Balm and Lavender Wound Spray have been developed!

These products, along with all of our natural care products, have been used with positive results on a variety of horses including those with sensitive skin conditions.

Lavender is a favorite for the herbal first aid kit and is excellent for cleaning wounds or stopping bleeding. It speeds the healing process of wounds by encouraging cell growth.

Lavender Wound Balm: This balm was developed specifically for the healing of wounds.  It contains essential oils of Lavender, Rosemary and Tea Tree oil as well as lavender flowers from our gardens.  The rich, creamy base of Shea and Cocoa Butter contains natural antioxidants and is very moisturizing.

Lavender Wound Spray: This spray contains lavender and witch hazel and is used for cleaning wounds.

These two products have been bundled together for a special set savings of 10% off of the regular price of purchasing them individually!  http://www.ferrellhollowfarm.net/Store.html

More Forage Please!

We are experiencing an arctic blast of winter weather in my area–snow, single digit temperatures, with wind chills that make it feel even colder.  So in these harsh conditions, what do I do differently at Ferrell Hollow Farm for my senior equine residents?  Feed more forage and more often!

Most horses here eat their hay from small mesh hay nets which provide many advantages.  The horses are unable to grab huge mouthfuls from these nets, so it slows down their consumption, making the hay last longer.  It also reduces quidding for the horses who are experiencing some dental challenges.  It keeps things fairly neat and tidy with little to waste.  The holes are no larger than 2 inches so there is no fear of a hoof getting caught.

Hay feedings have been increased from 3x a day to 4x a day which includes a late evening check. When feedings are spaced out in 4, 6, or 8 hour intervals, it allows me to really see what they are eating and during what period of time.  Each horses daily forage intake has been increased by roughly 25%.  While that sounds like a lot, horses need forage to keep them warm.  Their digestive systems are designed to ferment hay in the hindgut, which provides them with energy.  As long as they don't waste or leave it, then they get more.  And using a variety of forms, whether flake, chopped or soaked cubes makes it interesting!

My calculations show that over the past 2 years, Ferrell Hollow's Senior Retirement Farm has purchased (and fed) between 900-1,000 bales of hay per year! The way things look now, I will need roughly 300 more bales for the winter!!

Healthy Treats for Horses

Today is a very cold winter day, but the sun is shining and the sky is blue, so I decided to have a bit of fun with my horses Mary and Francis :)  My friend Lori, of Skode's Horse Treats, http://www.skodeshorsetreats.com/ makes wonderful, natural horse treats that are low in sugar and starch and my horses love them!  For the holiday, she is making gingerbread people.  Included in my box of cookies this month was two big gingerbread horse cookies–one for each of my big horses 🙂

Mary is dainty and first bit off the head, then each one of arms, then each one of the legs, and I told her we should save the middle for dinner :)  There is nothing dainty about Francis though!  He was very interested in devouring any body part his big 'ol lips could reach, and was not about to save any of it for later!
