Retirement Care for Senior Horses

Fall is here, and if you have a Senior horse needing retirement care, now is the time to get them situated!  Ferrell Hollow Farm is a unique facility that caters to senior horses only, many of which have special needs.

Nestled among the rolling hills in Middle TN, each horse receives an individualized care plan addressing their specific diet and management needs.  We are an established Senior Retirement horse farm and specialize in providing exceptional care for the older, retired horse.  We accept senior residents throughout the country with issues such as Cushing’s, Insulin Resistance, Arthritis, Chronic Lameness, Laminitis, Hard Keepers, and ones with Dental Challenges.  Many extras such as hoof trimming, worming and grooming are included in the monthly board rate.  The owners live on the premises so horses are always monitored and receive feedings and checks several times a day.

Consultations regarding nutritional and special needs are available to non-residents by phone and/or email.

Maggie’s Dental Exam

Earlier in the week Maggie began quidding everything she tried to eat!  She is 30 years old and has her teeth done every year, and was just seen about 6 months ago.  I called my dentist to discuss and scheduled him out for this morning.  In the meantime, the only thing she could eat was her Triple Crown Senior feed and soaked Beet Pulp.  That was given several times a day.  I could also tell she was not terribly comfortable eating. She is on a large grass pasture, however was quidding grass as well 🙁

The culprit was a dangling bottom tooth that needed to come out and was interfering with eating.  The dentist told her she will feel much better now!  Fortunately there was no infection and no swelling.  After 30 years that tooth must have just worn out.  She does have another tooth that is barely loose, but hopefully that won't become an issue.  Here she is after the exam happily munching the grass 🙂

Remembering Dawn

This afternoon, after a completely perfect day, Dawn had a stroke and passed away at age 28.  We are all still in shock over it.

Dawn L 8-24-11
Dawn had a working life in the mountains of North Carolina and when it was time for her to retire from that career, she was purchased by a wonderful woman who spent the next few years leisurely trail riding her.  When it was time for permanent retirement, they found Ferrell Hollow Farm :)  It has been a pleasure caring for Dawn for the past 4 1/2 years.  We had been very successful managing her Insulin Resistance, especially now that she had a life of leisure!  Dawn, I miss you, Siegfried misses you, Rachel misses you and especially Joan and Steve miss you.  I know that you are now standing in lush grass, eating to your hearts desire!

Please enjoy the slideshow of Dawn from 2011

Natural Body Scrubs

Cindy Daigre, owner of Ferrell Hollow Farm, makes many natural body care products for people and scrubs are one of her favorites!  Currently available are the Lavender Body Scrub, Peppermint Foot Scrub and Chocolate Sugar Scrub.  Each product is hand-made in small batches to ensure quality and consistency.  Only natural antioxidants and preservatives such as Vitamin E and Grapefruit Seed Extract are used, so there is no worry about being exposed to harmful chemicals!

Originally released earlier this year, the Chocolate Sugar Scrub is again available for the Fall and Winter.  Once you try it, you will not want to be without it!  Cocoa Butter and Coconut Oil are very moisturizing to the skin and the raw sugar will gently exfoliate any dry areas.

Fall Herbs for Horses

Fall Herbal Blend for Horses from Ferrell Hollow Farm

Cindy Daigre of Ferrell Hollow Farm in Readyville, TN has chosen five amazing herbs to blend together for its Fall Herbal Blend for horses.  This wonderful blend can help your horse ease into the seasonal transition time as the grass dries up and the temperatures begin to change.

Echinacea is a potent immune booster which is often given to horses with chronic infections and illnesses.  Fenugreek is often used to stimulate the appetite and for overall body condition.  Meadowsweet contains the same pain relieving properties as Aspirin.  Peppermint has a wonderful aroma and is beneficial to the digestive system for use in ulcers, colic or gas.  Rosehips are a rich source of Vitamin C and flavonoids and can help strengthen the hoof wall.
